Ongoing Research

We conduct user research studies year-round. Our topics change frequently, depending on what we are working on at the moment. Here are some recent research studies.

Key Alation Journeys

For this study, we are interested in learning how you use Alation in your day-to-day job. Topics include how you find and discover data, retrieve data, create and edit documentation, and structure the catalog for your organization. The goal of this study is to make the most common tasks you do in Alation a little easier to navigate.

Future of Compose

We know that Compose is a big reason why our users come to Alation in the first place. That’s why we are constantly seeking feedback to make it an even better experience that people of all technical levels can use. Our compose studies include surveys, usability testing, concept feedback, and interviews.

Catalog Personalization

We’ve been gathering feedback to understand how we can personalize the catalog experience to better suit all of our users needs. So far, we’ve focused on ways we can create personalized homepages so users can quickly find the data that matters most to them. We'd love to hear more ways we can personalize the catalog experience to make it easier to use!

Data Governance

We aim to learn how our customers use Alation to fulfill their data governance needs -- and pinpoint gaps so we can address them. Alation is a key component of our customer’s governance strategy and we are working to make it a one-stop-shop for your governance needs.

What types of studies do we do?

Our user research studies are currently 100% remote. Here is a brief description of some of the types of studies we conduct at Alation. Each research study is tailored to fit the needs of the project, so any of these methods could be used.

Interviews

This is the most common type of study we do. Typically, interview sessions last ~1 hour. In these sessions, you are the expert! We want to hear about your personal experiences and perspectives. Sometimes we’ll ask you to share your screen, if that’s ok with you.

Concept Feedback

We love to get user feedback on our features early in the process to make sure we are headed in the right direction. For these remote sessions, we will share our screen and show you some rough sketches of concepts so you can react to them. Since these concepts are usually in a very early stage of development, your input could help shape the final version that gets implemented in the catalog!

Surveys

We use surveys when we to gauge our users’ opinions about potential new product features.

Usability Testing

We do usability testing for features that are pretty much complete, but need tweaking. We set up a prototype that you can access via your browser. You will complete a series of short tasks so we can see what’s working and what’s confusing about our designs.

Diary Studies

Diary studies allow us to gain insight into your daily routines, so we can learn how Alation can make your job easier. For this type of study, we will ask you to record your activities, thoughts, and feelings while you engage in certain tasks throughout the day.

Journey Mapping

Journey Mapping is an interactive activity where we have you walk us through the steps you took to achieve a particular goal. Mapping out how you do common tasks in Alation (e.g. searching for data and downloading it), helps us identify pain points and opportunities for improvement.
